Apologies if this has been posted before, but I just saw it today:
830!
HOW A MASSACHUSETTS CARPENTER GOT THE HIGHEST SCRABBLE SCORE EVER.

Great analysis of the game in the article, even if it is a bit ingidnant and snotty.

"If 830—or any record—happens as a result of boneheaded play, tactical ignorance, or the pursuit of a good time, should it count? Or should records be reserved for those who have earned the right to set them, and who set them in expert fashion?"

How much snottier could you possibly be?? Ugh! I've read Stefan Fatsis's book and I didn't realize he was such a snob.

I read the book too and he didn't come off as quite as much as an egotistical ass from it there. Yeah, there are definitely undertones of fap fap fap fap fap here. Mehinks it comes from a heart of jealousy, though. Kind of like, "Well, *I* could have played that...if I wanted to...which I didn't..."

I wonder if he isn't dancing around the elephant in the room -- given the setting, the players involved and the absurdity of the game, how can anyone be sure the game isn't an elaborately crafted hoax? The Seattle scrabble club (the most convenient one I had stats available for) had about 20 triple-triples recorded during 2007; I'd guess they play about 60 games a night total over 40-50 weeks of the year, which means roughly one every 150 games played. That's worse than 20,000-to-one odds of two happening in one game, let alone ones as bizarre as QUIXOTRY. Throw in the 60+ point Z play, the claimed fishing for QUIXOTRY, and other smallish details, and it starts reaching the point where its' at least under suspicion, albeit hardly disproved...
